Rental Car Deposit Not Returned in Dubai? Here's Exactly What to Do
You returned the car on time, in the same condition, with a full tank. The company said your deposit would be refunded in 14-21 working days. It's been two months. No refund. Emails go unanswered. Sound familiar?
You're not alone. Delayed or missing deposit refunds are one of the most common complaints about car rental companies in Dubai. Here's what to do, step by step.
Know Your Rights First
Under UAE consumer protection law, a rental company must refund your security deposit according to the timeline stated in your contract. If no timeline is specified, a reasonable period applies — typically 14-30 days. Deliberately withholding a deposit without cause is a violation of UAE Federal Law No. 15/2020 on Consumer Protection.
Critical: Check your contract right now. Find the section on deposits. It should state the refund period and method. Take a photo or screenshot — this is your primary evidence.
Step-by-Step: Getting Your Deposit Back
Send a formal email (Day 1)
Email the rental company with your contract reference number, rental dates, car details, deposit amount, and a clear request for refund. State the deadline from your contract. Give them 7 days to respond. Keep it professional — this email may be used as evidence later.
Follow up with evidence (Day 7)
If no response, send a second email referencing your first. Attach your contract, proof of car return (photos, receipt), and bank statement showing the deposit charge. State that you will escalate to DED Consumer Protection if not resolved within 5 days.
File a DED complaint (Day 12)
File a complaint with the Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED) Consumer Protection. You can do this via their website (consumerrights.ae), by calling 600 54 5555, or through the Dubai Consumer app. Include all correspondence and your contract. DED typically contacts the company within 3-5 business days.
Credit card chargeback (Day 12, parallel)
If you paid by credit card, contact your bank to initiate a chargeback. Provide your contract showing the refund terms, proof that the refund period has passed, and evidence of your attempts to resolve with the company. Most banks have a 120-day window for chargebacks from the date of the transaction.
Escalate if needed (Day 30+)
If DED and chargeback don't resolve it, you have two further options. File a case with the Dubai Small Claims Court for amounts under AED 50,000 — no lawyer needed. Or, for larger amounts or if the company has a pattern of fraud, file a report with Dubai Police via their e-crime platform.

How to Prevent This Next Time
Before your next rental, do three things. First, ask about the deposit refund process before signing — how much, how long, and to which card. Second, get it in writing. Third, use RentScan to scan the contract and flag any unusual deposit terms before you sign.
Take timestamped photos of the car at both pickup and return. This eliminates the most common reason companies give for withholding deposits: "damage" that was already there.
Protect Yourself Next Time
Scan your rental contract with AI. Document the car with timestamped photos. Generate a professional dossier. All free.
